The Sudden Hurricane

After the tragic death of her husband, Mrs. Hunte decided to move back to Antigua, the native land of her mother. There, she and her two children, Romeo and Ramona, inherited the long-abandoned family house which appeared stable, when seen at first sight. But boy, they were in for a fright.

As days went by, the month of September approached and brought with it a very terrible hurricane. It had been a real long time since Mrs. Hunte had experienced a hurricane.

One dreadful morning, Romeo, Ramona, and their mother woke up to a tremendous downpour of rain. Mrs. Hunte had the impression that it will just be a heavily rainy day. Little to her knowledge, she and her children were in for a grand experience.

While listening to the early morning news, she heard that the country will actually be experiencing a category 5 hurricane; the first hurricane for her children. They hurried to the supermarket to try and prep as quickly as they could but later on found out that it wasn’t enough to withstand what this magnificent storm had in store.

The day progressed and suddenly, the rain increased rapidly, floodwaters began to gush into the house, winds began to howl and slam against the house and the house began to sway back and forth in the twirling wind. Scared, and shaking like leaves, Romeo and Ramona clenched onto their mother’s arms. Ramona looked up and asked, “MOTHER! WHAT IS HAPPENING? WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO US?” Her mother, though worried, calmly responded to her children, “don’t be scared. Everything will be just fine with God in our midst. What you are experiencing is your first hurricane.” “HURRICANE?!”, replied Romeo. “What is a hurricane mother?!”, he asked, almost out of breathe.

Mrs. Hunte embraced her children, kissed their foreheads softly, sat them both down, gave them both some warm chocolate milk, and began to tell them a story to distract them from the ‘war’ that was happening outside between the elements of nature. During the story, the electricity went “WOOSH!” and vanished so quickly, like a disappearing magician. Romeo and Ramona got scared once again. Mrs. Hunte explained to them that it was just the hurricane which had probably knocked the power out and that this was norm during a hurricane. Nevertheless, Mrs. Hunte continued her story. After the story, the children fell sound asleep. Mrs. Hunte said a prayer over herself and her children and went to bed herself.

The next day, the hurricane seemed to have lifted a bit. Mrs. Hunte decided to take Romeo and Ramona out for a little sight seeing. She reassured them that it was calm and safe enough to do so. So, off they went on their little sight seeing journey. As they walked through their new neighbourhood, Romeo, Ramona and their mother gazed upon all the damages that had happened last night during what seemed like the most dreadful thing ever. They saw houses rooted from their foundations and moved to other places, electricity post laying dead on the ground, roofs detached from the heads of their houses, vehicles resting on their sides-like turtles who have been flipped onto their backs, and so much more damages that were unbelievable. Romeo and his sister were both in shock. Arriving home, they were able to use the radio to listen the news again. The news report reported even more horrifying events that took place. Romeo and Ramona could not believe their ears. This was the most scariest yet amazing experience they had ever witness in their life. They were worried, yet still excited to see what all would have occurred. They both just can’t wait to share their story of their first hurricane experience with their family, their lates father’s family, when they visit them again.
